A MidAmerican Energy power outage impacted sections of Sioux City today.  A MidAmerican spokeswoman said the outage began sometime around 10:53 a.m.. Some 1,477 customers are impacted. Customers should have had power restored by 2 p.m..

Unity Point Health-St. Lukes was one of the biggest customers impacted by the outage. In a Facebook post, the hospital reported that their backup generators are running "and patient care continues," though ambulances are being diverted.

A MidAmerican Energy power outage is impacting sections of Sioux City today.  MidAmerican spokeswoman Tina Hoffman said the outage began sometime around 10:53 a.m.. According to a MidAmerican outage map, some 1,477 customers are impacted. Some smaller, apparently unrelated outages in the metro area bring the total without power to 1,488 as of noon.  Customers should have power restored by 2 p.m. Hoffman said.

The Iowa Department of Health recorded 43 more deaths due to complications of COVID-19, including two more in Woodbury County. The state also added more than 600  new cases. The number of hospitalizations at Sioux City’s two medical facilities has doubled in a day to a dozen patients. However, that number is less than 10% of the record high of 108 set back on December 1st.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has announced the state will not move forward with plans to contract with Microsoft to build a centralized COVID-19 vaccine registration system.

Iowa Educators for a Safe Return to School

A show of support for teachers and school safety in the age of COVID-19 is planned for this weekend in Sioux City. SPM’s Sheila Brummer has more.

An activist group organized a flash drive event for Saturday, pushing for a safe return to learning this upcoming academic year.

“I want to get back to normal, I want to get back to school. I just want get back to school.  I just want to have everyone wear masks so we can do it.”

More COVID-19 deaths have been reported in Iowa as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases topped 50,000 in the state. The state's online virus tracker shows seven deaths reported this morning from the day before, bringing the state's total to 954. The site also showed a jump of more than 600 confirmed cases this morning from the day before, bringing the state's total to nearly 50,200. 

Woodbury county has 16 new cases of the coronavirus today, with a total 3,760 cases and 52 deaths.

A dozen more people in the state of Iowa have died of complications of COVID-19, including two more deaths in Plymouth County.  The statewide death toll is now 950.  During a 24-hour period that ended at 10 this morning, there were more than 450 new cases of the novel coronavirus in Iowa.  Siouxland District Health reported five new additional cases in Woodbury County.

Health officials in Dakota County are tracking two more cases of COVID-19. Meanwhile, football practice is on hold in South Sioux City after a player tested positive for the virus.
