Sioux City Symphony Orchestra/Facebook

Saturday night, the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra opens its 104th season with a legendary performer.

Dame Evelyn Glennie is a Scottish percussionist who experienced hearing loss as a child.

“This is a woman who has not only carved out her own career as the first solo percussionist in history.  Obviously overcame such big odds, at the age of 12 was deaf.”

That’s Maestro of the Symphony, Ryan Haskins.

He says the Symphony has worked since 2014 to make the show happen.

Comedian Lewis Black takes the stage of the Orpheum Theatre on Saturday night.  Black is known for his angry observations of society.  Besides being a stand-up, he’s a best-selling author, playwright and commentator for television including “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”.  NPR describes him as having the mouth of a shock-jock and the heart of a liberal.

Several Democratic presidential candidates have appeared at the Frank LaMere Native American Presidential Forum today at Sioux City’s Orpheum Theater.

Former Maryland Congressman John Delaney took questions on wide range of issues from rescinding medals given to soldiers who took part in Native American massacres to opioid addiction.

Delaney was also asked how he would try to improve the chronically underfunded Indian health service hospitals and clinics.

Rep. Steve King's most recent insensitive remarks about rape are the kind that has doomed political candidates elsewhere, but some fellow Iowa Republicans say it's possible they actually could help the embattled congressman's re-election chances by reinforcing his credentials as a social conservative.

King made the comment Tuesday before a conservative group. He was attempting to justify his support for a ban on abortions without exceptions for rape and incest.
