A new task force is being put in place to fight racial injustice and to help develop police reform in Iowa after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The Equity Task force will be a joint effort with law enforcement and the NAACP and includes representatives from across the state.

Local members are Sioux City Chief Rex Mueller, Ike Rayford of the President of the local NAACP and Unity in the Community Founder Monique Scarlett.

Coming up on the exchange, we have a wrap up of the 2020 legislative session with Republican Siouxland State Senator Jim Carlin and Siouxland Democratic State Represenative Chris Hall. Carlin and other Republicans voted for a budget that is basically status quo in the age of COVID 19.

However, Chris Hall says republicans basically handed over decisions about the 8 billion dollar state budget to the governor and her staff.

A march of solidarity took place in Sioux City this afternoon.

It started at Cook Park with an estimated crowd of a few hundred.

The group then peacefully walked to Sioux City Police Headquarters.

They were joined by police chief Rex Mueller and leaders from local churches and NAACP.

The Bishop of the Catholic Dioceses of Sioux City released a statement today surrounding the death of George Floyd.

An estimated crowd of 300 joined together for peace and healing in downtown Sioux City Thursday afternoon after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Local law enforcement leaders, and representatives from Unity in the Community and NAACP attended the Unity in Prayer event.

A march is planned for Friday afternoon.  People plan to gather at Cook Park at 2 p.m. with the march at three.  The event was organized by a student from West High.

Iowa gamblers are getting the hang of legalized sports betting since it started in mid-August.

Data from the state Racing and Gaming Commission indicates Iowans placed $47.1 million in bets during the first six weeks since the state authorized it. Of that total, $21.6 million in bets were made through casinos and $25.46 million were made online.

Frank Lamere spent most of his adult life as an activist.  He lived in South Sioux City and worked as a member of the American Indian Movement in the 1970’s. 

LaMere was a leader in the Democratic party serving as a chairman of the National Native American Caucus and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention many times over. 

He recently received an honorary Doctorate from Nebraska Wesleyan University.  An honor that meant a lot to him.
