State Auditor Rob Sand is alleging Governor Kim Reynolds’ appearance in COVID-19 public service announcements last year was a violation of Iowa’s self-promotion law. Reynolds denies this.

The law prohibits state officials from using public money to promote their name and image. But it contains an exception for disaster emergencies, and Iowa has been under a disaster emergency proclamation for more than a year because of the pandemic.

Officials with the Sioux City Police Department say a suspected murder-suicide claimed the lives of a Sioux City couple yesterday.

Investigators say evidence at the scene shows that 60-year-old Nicholas Socknat may be responsible for the death of 51-year-old Kelli Socknat before shooting himself. The two lived together at a home near Morningside Elementary School.

Spokesperson Sgt. Jeremy McClure says there are no reports of disturbances involving the couple. However, given the circumstances detectives consider this a case an of domestic violence.

Health officials in South Dakota say no adverse cases were reported in nearly 16,000 doses of the J&J vaccine.  More than 78 thousand doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine have been administered in Iowa.

The ongoing trade war with China shows little indication of wrapping up, even with negotiators back at the table. Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley says he’s not putting stock in rumors or predictions about when an agreement might be reached.

Now I’m going to be very careful about being positive about things coming out.

Both countries’ economies are feeling the pain from tariffs, Grassley says, but the whole world will ultimately benefit from a resolution.

This week on The Exchange, we hear sound from the rededication of an old memorial marking the Old Missouri River Trail in War Eagle Park. The Daughters of the American Revolution first dedicated the monument back in 1928.  The group and many others assisted the group in finding the stone again and recreating the monument in War Eagle Park.

The monument was thought to be lost for much of the 20th century.  Native American Michael O'Conner prayed and sang at the event.
