This is Kelsey Patterson with the Sioux City Public Library and you’re listening to Check It Out. Today, I’m recommending A Bad Day for Sunshine by bestselling author Darynda Jones. Best known for her Charley Davidson series (which I’ve recommended previously on Check It Out), Jones is back with an all-new series, starring a snarky and sassy new heroine, Sheriff Sunshine Vicram. Turning her talents to the police procedural genre, Darynda Jones has written a wickedly funny first installment to the series.

Today, I’m recommending Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson-- a funny and offbeat novel about “family”.  If you’ve read either of Kevin Wilson’s previous novels (The Family Fang or Perfect Little World) you might know to expect this author to craft an everyday family drama and then introduce one strange element to make us see the story in a completely different way.

A ship set in ice. An axe. A giant disappearing into arctic waters. Such are the uncommon beginnings to an uncommon Western. In the Distance by Hernan Diaz approaches one of the great American genres with a cold but intense embrace.

Today, I am recommending Nine Perfect Strangers, the new novel by bestselling author Liane Moriarty.  After the runaway success of The Husband’s Secret and Big Little Lies, Liane Moriaty delivers a darkly humorous and satisfying story of nine individuals who book a “Mind and Body Total Transformation Retreat” at a secluded Australian wellness resort.

Every now and again there is a book that comes along that leaves you in a state of simple, quiet joy. The book that I would like to recommend to you did that to me. The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce.

Today, children’s books.

For more than ten years, One Book One Siouxland has brought the community together to enjoy great books and quality programming that expands the reading experience. Today, I’m excited to recommend the 2017 One Book One Siouxland selection Shoeless Joe by the late W.P. Kinsella. Written while Kinsella attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa, and originally published in 1982, this much beloved and magical baseball novel continues to resonate with readers of all ages.
