Iowa Democratic Represenative TIm Kacena of Sioux City

The Democratic leaders of the Iowa House and Senate urged Republican Governor Kim Reynolds to issue a formal stay-at-home order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  They sent a letter to the governor asking her to go further in her response to the new coronavirus

Democratic U.S. Congresswomen Abby Finkenauer and Cindy Axne also called on Reynolds to do the same.

Reynolds says she’s already put strong restrictions in place.  Siouxland Public Media’s Sheila Brummer talked to one local politician who feels local governments know what’s best for their communities.

A retired Sioux City Police Department officer announced today he will seek one of three Woodbury County Board of Supervisors seats in November.

Forty-two-year-old Kevin McCormick will run as a Democrat for the District 1 seat. McCormick was a first-year police officer, when he was shot in the head during a routine traffic stop in 2012, then returned to work within two weeks.

  The Iowa Senate has passed a K-twelve school funding deal nearly three weeks after a deadline passed for establishing the funding increase.

It would give a 2.3 percent increase or about 85-million new dollars for base per-student public school funding. Republicans in the Senate first proposed a 2.1 percent increase, and the House and the governor proposed 2.5 percent. 

Democratic Senator Herman Quirmbach of Ames says it’s too little too late, and the state can afford to do more.

Democrat Cory Booker today has dropped out of the presidential race after failing to qualify for the December primary debate.  The U.S. senator from New Jersey had struggled in polling and fundraising since launching his bid last February. Booker was unable to hit 5% support in a single qualifying poll required to make it on the January debate stage.
