The Iowa Department of Public Health shows nearly a half million people have received the COVID-19 vaccine. One more Iowan has died for a total of 5,675 deaths and 216 in Woodbury County. The number of new cases has fallen to 138 with nine in Woodbury County, according to Siouxland District Health.

Siouxland District Health recorded 8 new cases today with a 14-day test positivity rate of 7.5%. There are 18 patients being treated at Sioux City’s two hospitals. Positivity rates and hospitalizations have stayed almost the same for the past few days. Statewide 171 are hospitalized.

Iowa’s new voting law faces a legal challenge.

Governor Kim Reynolds signed the Republican-backed bill into law yesterday (Monday). It shortened the time allowed for early, mail, and Election Day voting, and made many additional changes to Iowa’s election procedures.

The League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa filed a lawsuit.

Attorneys argue the new law unconstitutionally burdens Iowans’ voting rights.

In a statement yesterday, Reynolds said the new law will promote transparency and accountability in elections.

Sioux City Community Schools

The Sioux City Community School District's weekly coronavirus report shows only one staff member and no students testing positive the first week after winter break.

Two-hundred are out on quarantine. That's down from about 500 at the end of December.

Class resumed on Monday and students have at least one more week of hybrid learning.

That’s where they go to school two-days a week.  An update surrounding the learning plan is expected to come Monday night with the next school board meeting.

At a news conference Tuesday morning, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds says cases of COVID-19 and hospitalizations are on the way down.  She credits extra restrictions issued for Iowans last month.  Reynolds urges the public to follow health guidelines, including avoiding gathering during the holidays.

Reynolds says more than 8,400 front-line health care workers have been immunized for COVID-19. Last week, state officials had hoped to receive 26,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Reynolds pointed to a planning error that caused an overestimate in the state’s allotment.

The Sioux City Community School District released a weekly report on COVID-19 cases and for the first time also listed students and staff in quarantine.

This past week, the report showed four students and six staff members tested positive for the virus.

One multi-grade classroom at North Middle was put into Emergency Response Virtual Learning.

New York Times

The New York Times highlighted Sioux City in a story released today on places hard hit by the coronavirus.

Iowa coronavirus trends continue to worsen as increasing numbers of hospitalizations further stress hospitals and health care workers as they try to keep up with the surge.

Iowa Department of Public Health data showed almost 4,800 additional cases in the past 24 hours, and 26 more deaths, bringing the state total to 1,898.  There are two more deaths in Woodbury County, for 105 in all.

It was the fifth consecutive day Iowa reported more than 4,000 new cases a day.

South Dakota Department of Health

A grim record set by the state of South Dakota when it comes to COVID-19.  The number of deaths recorded in one day was 19.

Previously, the most fatalities was 14, reported on October 8th and 22nd.  There were almost 1,000 new cases added in one day.

South Dakota has the worst rate of positive tests, hospitalizations and cases per 100,000 people in the country, according to data compiled by the New York Times.

North Dakota still leads the nation in deaths.

All three Siouxland States are seeing record levels of hospitalizations due to COVID-19.

In Iowa, there are 449 patients with Siouxland District Health reporting 72 getting treatment at Sioux City’s two hospitals.  There were 31 in the middle of September.  Siouxland District Health recorded two more deaths in Woodbury County for a total of 76.  There were more than 100 new cases.

Gov. Kim Reynolds acknowledged Iowa is seeing surging numbers of coronavirus cases and record hospitalizations, but she says the health care system could handle the increase and no further action was needed to reduce infections.

There were 444 people being treated for the coronavirus in hospitals as of Wednesday morning, and in the past 24 hours the state had 919 new confirmed positive cases and 15 more deaths.  The biggest increase comes from increased hospitalizations in northwest Iowa, including 62 at Sioux City’s two hospitals, according to Siouxland District Health.

Iowa posted more than 1,000 new confirmed coronavirus cases for the third straight day as the coronavirus continued to aggressively spread in many areas of the state, including northwest Iowa.

State public health data posted this morning showed 1,142 new confirmed cases in the past 24 hours with over 90,700 cases now identified since March.

The state posted nine additional deaths for a total of 1,367.  There was one more death recorded in Woodbury County on the state coronavirus website for 69 in all.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds is allowing bars and night clubs to reopen tomorrow in four of the six counties where they’ve been closed because of high coronavirus rates.

Bars in Polk, Linn, Black Hawk and Dallas counties can reopen at 5:00 pm tomorrow Wednesday. Bars in Story and Johnson counties—the homes of Iowa State University and the University of Iowa—must remain closed for now.

For the past several weeks, the White House Coronavirus Task Force has recommended that Iowa close bars in the majority of Iowa’s 99 counties.

Iowa Department of Public Health shows another dozen Iowans have died from COVID-19.   Five-hundred more have tested positive for the virus in a 24-hour period.

Facing the nation’s second-most coronavirus cases per capita over the last two weeks, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has defended her coronavirus strategy as a “balanced approach” that has kept the state’s economy humming.

A new report from the White House Coronavirus Task Force has found Iowa has the highest rate of new COVID-19 cases in the country.

The report released yesterday puts the state in the red zone for both cases and test positivity, which is more than 10 percent. It says community transmission continues to be high across the entire state.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds says she is allocating $100 million in federal funds to help livestock producers, the biofuels industry, beginning farmers and small-scale meat processors recover from the coronavirus pandemic. As many Iowa farmers deal with the impact of a massive storm and continue to suffer from lower demand for corn and soybeans and extremely low prices, Reynolds says she will use money from the federal CARES Act to programs to help agriculture related businesses and farmers.
