When white settlers moved into northwest Iowa in the late 19th century, they squared the landscape with mud roads that make the flat land a grid. Of 23 townships of Sioux County, 19 are cut out into perfect squares.

Sunday, October 15, we went to church. The wind was then blowing wildly, but this became worse further along in the day. When we got out of church, we saw smoke in the distance, because the prairie was on fire.

A new report says a nearly $200 million decline in Nebraska's agricultural exports in 2017 was driven by President Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs on U.S. trading partners.

The Nebraska Farm Bureau report attributes the drop to decreases in soybean and corn exports, while beef and pork exports both increased in 2017.

The findings come as Trump imposed his latest tariff hike on Chinese goods Friday. 

A bill to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes in Nebraska has advanced out of a legislative committee.  It will now go to the full Unicameral for debate.

The Documentary, "Growing Magic: The Mickey Mouse Cornfield Story," was written and produced by Buena Vista digital media students. It tells the story of a card formed in a cornfield for Mickey Mouse's birthday in the year of 1988.

The documentary was worked on for the past three years and upon it's premiere, Siouxland Public Media spoke with teacher and Disney fanatic, Jerry Johnson. Siouxland Public Media also had the chance to speak with two of his students, Olivia Weisler and Mason Mcgrew. They discuss parts of the story and share details of the production.

Awful Purdies

The Awful Purdies, a quintet of multi-instrumentalists based in Iowa City, will perform in Orange City this Wednesday. Their most recent work, All Recipes are Home, included music and theater. The inspiration for the project came from conversations, in person and in writing, the band members had with Iowans who work the land.
