Iowa PBS

The two candidates for U.S. Senate met face-to-face during a debate on Iowa PBS Monday night after weeks of biting political adds.  You can see the full debate here.

Incumbent Joni Ernst of Red Oak faces a serious challenge from West Des Moines businesswoman, Theresa Greenfield.  A recent poll from the Des Moines Register/Mediacom gave Greenfield a slight lead in the race for the 6-year term.

The House Judiciary Committee holds its first hearing in the impeachment inquiry.

Representative Steve King took to the house floor today in Washington to try and persuade other members of congress to approve funding to help fight substance abuse in Siouxland.

He added a proposal to a potential funding bill that would help pay for drug and alcohol treatment services for Native Americans.

King also honored the memory of community leader Frank LaMere who died this week of cancer.

The Trump administration reached agreements with Canada and Mexico to lift tariffs on metals imported from those countries.  The deal resolves a yearlong standoff that inflamed North Atlantic tensions and complicated efforts to ratify a revised trade deal.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and U.S. Senator Joni Ernst praised the deal.  Ernst issued a statement saying the deal was huge news for Iowa, especially the state’s farmers and manufacturers.

Iowa U.S. Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst say flood control should be the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ number 1 priority in managing the Missouri River.

At a Senate field hearing in Glenwood today the corps of engineers defended it’s handling of this year’s historic flooding, saying,  last month’s weather was so extreme that flooding could not have been prevented.

Local and national leaders joined forces today to try and come up for solutions for homelessness and substance abuse in Siouxland.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee at 2:30pm ET today, as the investigation continues into Russian attempts to influence the 2016 presidential election. Sessions is expected to take questions about his recusal from the Russia investigation, his own meetings with Russian officials, and what if anything he knew about a private Oval Office meeting between President Trump and fired FBI Director James Comey.
