The contenders are ready in the race for Woodbury County Sheriff and three Supervisor seats. 

The filing deadline for candidates ended at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24.  

Two Republicans are running to replace Sheriff Dave Drew who didn’t seek re-election.

Todd Wieck, is a major with the sheriff’s office and will face-off with Chad Sheehan a retired Sioux City Police Officer who operates a consulting firm in school and business safety and security.  They face off in a primary on June 2.

The state of Iowa reports 21 more confirmed cases of COVID-19 for a total of 145. 

This comes the day after Governor Kim Reynolds announced the state's first death linked to the coronavirus outbreak.

The victim is a resident of Dubuque County who was between 61 and 80 years old.

Another news conference is planned for 2:30 this afternoon.

Sen. Cory Booker joined Shelby and Ike to discuss his proposed policies as a Democratic candidate* for 

President, policies, he argues, that will bring the country back together. He believes that his appeal to African-Amercian voters makes his candidacy viable and that Hilary Clinton's 2016 loss was partly due to her failure to appeal to the lived experiences of the diverse nature of the Democratic Party. And he describes how his engagement in the African-American community drives his policy.

South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg is outpacing the other Democratic Presidential candidates in Iowa, according to a  new Monmouth Poll out today.

Buttigieg garnered 22% support, former Vice President Joe Biden (19%) and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren (18%). Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders also made gains from Monmouth's August poll, but with 13%, fell outside of the top three status in Iowa. 

Buttigieg is up 14 percentage points since August, according to a new Monmouth Poll of likely caucus-goers.

Today is Veterans Day and vets, city and county officials and residents met this morning at the Woodbury County Courthouse to honor those who have served in the military.   Director of the Sioux City Vet Center Mary Jordan told those gathered in the courthouse rotunda that when the Vet Center started in the 1970s vets were not always treated with respect.

Vermont Senator and presidential candidate Bernie Sanders wrapped up his latest swing across Iowa last night.

He spoke to a crowd of a few hundred last night at the Orpheum Theatre in Sioux City.

Tragically instead of seeing good paying jobs, education and health care coming to our rural communities, we are far too often seeing despair, depression and people losing hope.

Sanders repeated common themes like Medicare for all and investing in rural America.

Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley says Congress won't consider a new trade deal with Mexico and Canada until President Donald Trump lifts tariffs that have prompted other countries to take actions that have hurt U.S. farmers.

Speaking today with reporters, Grassley said Trump must end steel and aluminum tariffs before Congress will ratify a United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. Farmers in Iowa and across the country have been hurt by reciprocal tariffs placed on agricultural products, including pork and soybeans.

State Senator Randy Feenstra of Hull says that in the first months of seeking to oust fellow Republican Steve King in the Iowa 4th congressional district seat in the 2020 election, he has raised more than $260,000.

Feenstra in a Friday release to the Journal summarized fundraising for the first three months of the year. He said the $260,000 marks the highest amount ever raised over the first quarter by any first-time Republican congressional candidate in Iowa.

Feenstra announced in January he would run against King.
