Newscast 05.31.22: Grassley wants his legislation included in new efforts to reduce gun violence in schools; New NE license plate

Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa says he’s hopes to hear soon about efforts to reach compromise on gun control legislation, especially if it includes his bill.

Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas and Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut are scheduled to meet this week to establish a “framework” to find common ground on a response to recent mass shootings.

Under his bill called the Eagles Act, Grassley says trained professionals would be tasked with working to identify and manage threats at the high school level before they occur. The bill would direct experts in child psychology to work closely with a federal threat assessment center to develop evidence-based techniques to identify potential threats.

A South Dakota judge has delayed the release of affidavits that were submitted by law enforcement to justify issuing search warrants in the child pornography investigation of banker and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford.

In an email today, a Minnehaha County Judge said the affidavits would remain sealed until parties in the case seeking to unseal them have a chance to submit written briefs. The Argus Leader and ProPublica have been fighting in court for nearly two years to have the affidavits unsealed.

Late Friday the Attorney General's Office notified the county judge that its investigation had been completed "and has determined that there are no prosecutable offenses within the jurisdiction of the state of South Dakota."

A new Nebraska license plate features the outline of a mosaics featured at the state capitol building. The new general plate depicts a mosaic called "The Genius of Creative Energy," which features a man riding atop the clouds behind a backdrop of lightning.

Gov. Pete Ricketts unveiled the new license plate design this morning. the state will print about 3 million new plates before the end of the year and start issuing them in January.
