Check It Out: Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Leigh Allen
This is Michael Maxwell with the Sioux City Public Library and you’re listening to Check It Out.
Today, I am recommending Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Leigh Allen.
Do you enjoy trashy reality television as much as you love to read books? I firmly believe one’s media diet should have a healthy blend of both high and low culture, and Patricia Wants to Cuddle takes everything I love about both and blends it into a compulsively readable campy horror novel.
Follow a deplorable cast of contestants on a Bachelor-esque reality show as their trip to an isolated island in the Pacific Northwest goes off the rails when one of them goes missing. Could they have been snatched by the island’s resident Bigfoot? Seems likely.
Yes, this story involves a bloodthirsty Sasquatch.
Reality T.V. tropes meet creature feature terror in this genre blend of thriller and comedy. Readers will gag and laugh in equal measure as these hapless characters snipe and bicker amongst each other while trying to evade certain death. Each chapter shifts perspective between characters, mimicking the “talking head” feel of watching a reality show, and the plot involves a mystery that will keep readers turning pages.
This is a great book for pop culture lovers- it combines the crude joy of binge-watching with the escapism of getting lost in a good book. It’s one of the most bizarre stories I’ve ever read, and I think that in and of itself makes it worth recommending.
