The Sioux City council will vote today on a plan that some Siouxlanders are actively opposing on environmental grounds. The plan would clear soil away from a high hill that lies north of 41st Street, near North Middle School, If the council agrees, Rodney Lieber and his excavation company could soon be moving most of the soil to make way for construction.
Woodbury County has officially departed the Sioux Rivers Regional Mental Health and Disability Services agency. As of. July 1, now belongs in the Rolling Hills Community Services Region.
There were challenges in fitting Woodbury County, with a population of more than 100,000 residents, into a more rural region, with the combined seven other counties having 98,000 residents.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has finished treating an invasive plant in the Iowa Great Lakes region this year. efforts mostly worked against the plant that grew a little differently than past years.
Thick, invasive Curly-Leaf Pondweed can hinder boater access and even cause algae blooms when it dies back in summer. Iowa uses two methods to treat it: An aquatic herbicide and a boat that cuts and harvests the weeds. But the plant didn’t reach above the surface everywhere they treated on East Okoboji Lake, probably because of cooler temperatures this spring. Mike Hawkins with the Iowa DNR says that made the mechanical harvesting process difficult.
Hawkins says they treated a little less than the planned 85-acres this year. 070819 504
