110519 504

It is election day across Iowa. Voters are electing local and school board candidates.  Six candidates are competing for four seats on the Sioux City Community School board There are also school board races in the Lawton-Bronson and Sgt. Bluff Luton districts.

Incumbent Sioux City mayor Bob Scott is being challenged by ESL teacher and business owner Maria Rundquist and incumbent council member Rhonda Capron is going up against challenger and 4th street restaurant own Julie Schoenherr.  This is the first time Iowa voters have elected city council and school board candidates at the same time in a general election.

This is also the first time Iowa’s voter id law is being used across the state.  Voters must bring an accepted form of ID to the polls or find an attestor to confirm their status.  If no attestor is available, voters can use a provisional ballot, which can be confirmed later on.

The polls are open until 8 p.m.

Iowa U-S Senator Chuck Grassley says he’s hearing encouraging news about the new trade agreement between the U-S, Mexico, and Canada.  Grassley told reporters this (Tues) morning that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has suggested the accord could come up for a vote in the House by late this year.  He says if that happens, the Senate can quickly ratify it.

Grassley says it doesn’t take 60 votes.  He says there is a limit on debate ahead of time, after this debate starts, there would be an up or down vote, without any amendments.  Grassley believes the agreement will be approved easy in the United States Senate.

The U-S-M-C-A was signed last November.  House Democrats have been pushing for tougher labor and environmental standards in the agreement before voting on it.
