The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Sioux City will likely be offering sports betting by the middle of September.  The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission this morning approved a contract between the Hard Rock and the third-party sports betting operator, “Hard Rock Iowa," which is a partnership between Hard Rock Sioux City and Hard Rock International.

Mobile sports betting, which allows gamblers can place mobile bets with an electronic device, will come later.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety failed to conduct nationwide background checks before issuing more than 5-thousand licenses to private investigators, security guards, and people working in bail enforcement.

An investigation by the state auditor’s office found one DPS employee was responsible for making sure applicants for so-called “guard cards” went through an Iowa background check and a nationwide check.

DPS Commissioner Stephan Bayens says there’s an ongoing criminal investigation so he won’t speculate on the intent.

0“Based on our investigation thus far it did not appear that there was any intent behind it where that individual was receiving some sort of tangible benefit for doing this.”

Bayens says he’s not aware of anyone being harmed because of this, or of any embezzlement of application fees.

University of Northern Iowa President….Mark Nook….says the Cedar Falls campus needs to extend…….. next year’s tuition freeze….. until U-N-I’s tuition attracts more students.

Nook couldn’t give fall enrollment figures…but admitted U-N-I is expecting around ten-thousand students. That would be four-thousand fewer than the peak in 2001.

The Board of Regents is freezing UNI’s fall tuition……but hiking the tab at Iowa State and the University of Iowa ……by nearly four percent.
