The governors of tri-state region talked about the need to train workers and fill jobs in the post-pandemic era, today at Tri-State Governors' Conference. the conference in the South Sioux City Marriot on the Riverfront. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem talked about possible ways to fill high-demand jobs.
Governor Ricketts said Nebraska is focusing on career pipeline that starts in middle school, to a career academy and post-secondary education the apprenticeship program.
“We’ve got about 15 hundred more people in that those registered apprenticeship programs we do through the department of labor, or for our career scholarship program, which applies to community colleges, state colleges, private colleges, so that young people can pursue those high-demand high wage fields like health care and technology.”
Iowa governor Kim Reynolds said that Iowa has the highests number of students that participate in dual enrollment or community college credits.
“But what I love most about the workplace learning and registered apprenticeship programs is just that, just the connection we are bring business and industry into the classroom we are taking the classroom and inserting those students in the various industries to really give them a taste of what that job looks like.”
Governor Noem of South Dakota agreed, saying her state has been super aggressive about apprentice programs.
Ricketts, Noem and Reynolds also talked about the need to get peole off of government assistance and back to work. The governors were also asked about sending state patrol officers to help out with immigration at the US-Mexico border and said that they stood by that choice.
