A new poll shows that fewer than one-third of Iowans now support the Legislature's push for an amendment that says the state constitution does not secure a right to abortion. The Republican-controlled Iowa Legislature is working this year to approve the amendment.
According to a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll, support for the proposal has dipped slightly from 33% last spring to 31% this year. The opposition has also risen, with 58% of Iowans now saying they're opposed, up from 54% a year ago. The remaining 11% of respondents are not sure.
Iowa today is reporting another 19 COVID-19 deaths and 907 confirmed coronavirus cases. Hospitalizations also rose slightly. The state has delivered 1.37 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine, and more than 877,000 people have received at least one dose. Still, just 16.8% of the state's total population has been fully vaccinated. Health experts blame the uptick on spring weather and the belief that the coronavirus pandemic is waning.
It looks like a House committee won't be deciding on a challenge to Iowa's 2nd District election results on Monday. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said yesterday that she expected the committee would decide Monday about whether to allow the case to move forward but then reversed herself. The House Committee on Administration is reviewing the election results after a district-wide recount showed Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks winning by just six votes over Democrat Rita Hart. Congress provisionally seated Miller-Meeksin January while Hart filed a challenge with the U.S. House committee asking for a review of the results.
Hart has alleged 22 ballots should have been counted and would have swayed the outcome of the race.
