SSC Police Officer Recovering, Steve King to Hold Town Hall Meeting in Hornick, 5:04

052219 504

A South Sioux City police officer injured in a recent shoot out with a suspect is slowly recovering from his injuries.

“I feel like I’m getting better every day.  It’s a slow process but it’s getting better.”   And, mentally, I’m trying to get the physical part done first then I’ll work  on the mental.”

That’s officer Brian VanBerkum, a 19-year veteran of the police force.

The community of South Sioux City lined the streets when VanBerkum was released from the hospital last week.

“It was overwhelming, it was a great feeling to see my community come out and support me.”

A grand jury investigation continues into the shooting outside of a bar and liquor store on May 11th.

Someone had reported seeing a person with a firearm.

Police say officer VanBerkum arrived on the scene, confronted the man and the two exchanged gunfire.  The man with the gun died at the hospital.

4thDistrict Republican Representative Steve King has set town hall meetings for next week, and one in Woodbury County will be preceded by an event in which King honor residents of Hornick, a town that was evacuated in March flooding, according to the SC Journal.

The town hall events will be held Tuesday, first at 10 a.m. at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, and followed at 3:15 p.m. at city hall in Hornick. A mandatory evacuation was ordered in Hornick on March 14thafter snowmelt and a breached levee on the West Fork of the Little Sioux River caused extensive flooding of city streets.

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is canceling her events in Sioux City and other Iowa towns to cast a vote in the U.S. Senate, according to the Sioux City Journal.  Harris had planned to speak tomorrow afternoon at Morningside College about Sioux City about teacher pay and other issues.

The Harris campaign said that event, plus others in Iowa on Friday, will not be held, so she can vote on a disaster relief measure tomorrow night.

A Harris event in Sioux City with the Truman Club members of the Woodbury County Democratic Party is also canceled.
