The House hearings on the impeachment inquiry wrapped up this afternoon. Several witnesses came forward and claimed President Donald Trump had asked Ukraine for help looking into the activities of former Vice President and now Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son in exchange for military aid.
Siouxland Democratic Senate candidate Michael Franken is a retired three-star admiral who has served three presidents. He is one of five candidates competing for a chance to challenging Republican Senator Joni Ernst next year. Asked about the actions of President Trump, Franken said the president acted in a way that harmed relations with Ukraine and benefited himself.
“Tossing in a last-minute caveat, especially caveats that benefit a single individual over national objectives is frankly deplorable. And it is a pollution of the system, which we have historically been highly critical of.”
Franken says the Senate should carefully prepare to vote on the impeachment of President Trump. Senator Joni Ernst has said that she wants to see the impeachment process play through and has not made a comment in favor of or against impeachment.
David Wiggins has become acting chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court in the wake of Mark Cady’s death last week.
Three years ago, Chief Justice Cady appointed Wiggins to act in his place if he couldn’t be there. Now, Wiggins is serving as acting chief justice until the vacancy on the state’s highest court is filled. Then the court will elect a new chief.
Lawmakers this year shortened the term of the chief justice, so the court will hold another vote for chief justice in 2021.
