The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct one of its six annual spring public meetings in Sioux City.

The meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. April 10 at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, 900 Larsen Park Road.

The corps will provide a status of mountain snowpack, plains snowmelt, a forecast for the runoff this year and how operations will meet the authorized purposes for the Missouri River's reservoir system.

A Nebraska City meeting will be at 5 p.m. on April 11th at the Fox Center Event Space, 

A House subcommittee has advanced a bill increasing the penalty for causing the death of an unborn person. The term unborn person raised controversy when the bill passed in the Senate because it’s defined as starting at conception.

Republican Representative Steven Holt of Denison supports the bill and the language.

The term unborn person is simply acknowledging the reality of what’s going on.

Opponents say adopting the bill’s definition of an unborn person would be a step toward limiting abortion rights. The bill now goes to the House judiciary committee which needs to advance the proposal this week or it won’t available for debate.

A House-endorsed plan to make a few adjustments to Iowa’s medical marijuana law has cleared its first hurdle in the Iowa Senate.

Senator Rich Taylor, a Democrat from Mount Pleasant, said he’d like to do more, but it’s as far as the House seems willing to go.

A key Republican on a Senate subcommittee says she, too, is reluctant to change the bill — and potentially make it unpalatable to the House.
