More voters than expected turned out in Sioux City yesterday for the general election.
Mayor Bob Scott won another term in office. He picked up almost 70% of the vote over Maria Rundquist.
“I’m happy we won and by the margin that we won obviously. I think it confirms people are somewhat happy with my performance. I’m working really hard for the citizens and I’m going to continue that.”
It was a tight race for the city council and school board.
The owner of SOHO Julie Schoenherr beat incumbent Rhonda Capron who was seeking her 3rd term in office, 51% to 48%.
Capron says she doesn’t plan to run for public office again.
“I’m done. You know things have changed over the last few years. I go high. I want to be positive and politics have changed and I don’t like the way they are going.”
Six people were on the ballot for four school board seats.
Dan Greenwell received the most votes for the school board with 22 percent, followed by Juline Albert with 17% and Monique Scarlett and Taylor Goodvin with 15% each. Current board member Miyuki (my-you-key) Nelson didn’t make the top four. She trailed by only 200 votes with 14%. Shaun Broyhill also received 14%.
Woodbury County Election Commission and Auditor Pat Gill say more than 26% of voters cast their ballots, that’s more than double than normal.
