Sioux City Trails Popular During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Getting outside for a walk is encouraged by health experts during the COVID-19 outbreak. Even though Sioux City parks are closed for now, trails are still open.  Sioux City Parks and Recreation staff even posted signs to encourage people using the parks to follow guidelines to keep people safe.

Interim Recreation Supervisor John Byrnes talked to Siouxland Public Media about the issue and popularity of the parks during the pandemic.

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE CITY OF SIOUX CITY:

Sioux City and Parks and Recreation staff are posting signs in prominent parks around town encouraging park users to follow guidelines to help keep people healthy. With the start of summer right around the corner and many large events being canceled, parks and trails are anticipated to be busier than ever before. Temporary signage added to park entrances and along trails are aimed at reinforcing the fact that germs love to travel, even while outdoors.

Park users are urged to follow the following guidelines to help mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 while outdoors:

- Give each other 6 feet of space on trails and in parks

- Avoid peak hours, such as 7-9am and 5-7pm

- Steer clear of benches, shelters, and play areas

- Don’t walk, run, or bike in groups

- Let people know if you need to pass

- Wear a mask even while outside in populated public areas

Sioux City Interim Recreation Supervisor John Byrnes said, “Staying active is one of the best ways to keep your mind and body healthy. We encourage people to visit our parks and trails, but to do so in a safe manner.”

Sign graphics were designed by students from the University of Iowa College of Public Health as a way to help runners, bikers, dog walkers and outdoor enthusiasts to utilize outdoor spaces in a safe manner.
