Sioux City Promotes New Program to Help Homeless People; Plymouth County Death

Authorities in northwestern Iowa are investigating the death of a man hit by a vehicle along U.S. Highway 75 in Plymouth County.  The Sioux City Journal reports that the man's body was found early Monday morning after a motorist called 911 around 3 a.m. to say he had hit something on the road.  A second 911 caller reported seeing a body in the road.  Plymouth County Sheriff's deputies are working on the case.

The City of Sioux City asks people to help the homeless population by donating to a city-wide nonprofit instead of giving to individuals. The city announced this morning that it will help people give to homeless people with the most impact. In 2019, the City of Sioux City Neighborhood Services Division began a Homeless Street Outreach and Rapid Rehousing Program. During the past year, 200 people were served by this program, with 89 people in 57 households achieving permanent housing.

Donations can be made to a new www.siouxcityassist.org to agencies that provide services and shelter. Additionally, signs will be placed around Sioux City encouraging people to visit www.siouxcityassist.org rather than donating directly to individuals.

Iowa state Rep. Ras Smith is running for governor in 2022, he announced Tuesday, becoming the first major Democrat to declare his candidacy.

Thirty three-year-old Ras Smith is African American. He is a three-term representative from Waterloo. Ras raised his profile last year by helping to broker a police accountability law that passed unanimously in the wake of nationwide protests over the murder of George Floyd.

Since then, he has been critical of many of the Republican-controlled Legislature's actions that he says stand in contrast to the unity shown last year over police accountability.
