The Iowa Board of Medicine has taken action against a Sioux City plastic surgeon.

A hearing is scheduled for October surrounding Dr. Adam Smith, a plastic surgeon with Tri-State Specialists.

“I have done my best for my whole time in Siouxland here to provide the best care I can for patients,” said Dr. Adam Smith.

The medical board alleges Dr. Smith failed to provide appropriate surgical care to 17 patients between December of 2014 to September of 2017.

“From my standpoint it looks like they are doing their due diligence, they are investigating and they’re calling me to the Iowa Board to basically testify in front of them to why I made the decision I did,” said Dr. Adam Smith.

Jena Reyes of Sioux City tells Siouxland Public Media News she is one of the patients who contacted the state of Iowa.

“I started having complications immediately.”

Reyes, who is a nurse, says she underwent a tummy tuck in August of 2017 to try and fix lower abdominal pain experienced after child birth.

“He owes so many women apologies and I hope he finds a new career.”

Reyes says she looked disfigured after the procedure and then battled a major infection for months.  She wants others to follow this advice.

“As a patient, please do your research on your doctor.  Do a background check, Google search, find out where they practiced before.  You can check.”

Dr. Smith says he can’t comment on claims made by Jena Reyes without her permission.

He does admit he no longer has surgical priviledges at Mercy or UnityPoint Health St. Luke’s because of clerical errors when his mail was forwarded to to a different location.

“Paperwork had fallen through the cracks and I wasn’t even aware of some of these actions and they kind of snowballed downhill.”  to the point where I am suppose to have a hearing with UnityPoint to discuss these things.”

Siouxland Public Media contacted both hospital to get more details on surgical priviledges.  A respresentative with Mercy says Dr. Smith doesn't have hospital privileges, but personnel information is confidential.

Dr. Smith says he expects to be vindicated of any wrong doing when he makes his case before the board.

He also faces two other lawsuits in Woodbury County District Court involving two other patients.

Three other patients also contacted Siouxland Public Media News concerned about the care they received from Dr. Adam Smith.
