Sioux City Lawmaker Wants Iowa Governor to Issue "Stay-at-Home" Order

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds faces intense criticism for refusing a statewide “stay-at-home” order.  One local state lawmakers says it’s something he also would like to see enacted as well.  Siouxland Public Media’s Sheila Brummer reports.

State Representative Chris Hall says Iowa need clear guidance when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“You can look around and see people are continuing to use public space; through no bad intentions of their own are putting others, especially older Iowans at risk.”

The Democrat from Sioux City says the Governor sends out mixed-messages and for the past two to three weeks he’s heard concerns from citizens about the need to shelter in place.

The governor’s office has been very good to work with on a number of important fronts. But, I think the public is ahead of where the governor is.”

Governor Kim Reynolds insists Iowa does have strong guidelines.  On Monday, she increased closures to include play and camp grounds, bowling alleys and malls.

Hall says several business owners reached out to him to push for more.

“Business owners understand this is something we need to do right now.  But, it’s important that we do it promptly that we take it seriously because the faster we get through this period the faster Iowans will get back to work and support the economy.”

All three Siouxland states haven’t issued official “shelter-in-place” orders.  All three Governors are Republicans.

“It’s more important to listen to public health experts than it is for politicians and elected officials making decisions on an ideological view.”
