Sioux CIty Council Votes Unanimously to Approve Purchase of Police Body Cameras

Body Cam Vote 080320

Today the Sioux City Council voted unanimously to approve a resolution awarding a purchase order of more than $260,000 dollars for 120 body worn camera units, and all necessary equipment to operate and maintain the system.

Sioux City Police Chief Rex Mueller said the body cameras will be operational by the end of the year.

“So we are going to make this transition as soon as possible, but set fall as a date, because there are unanticipated things, the delivery piece.  But as soon as we have them we will begin working with them and integrating them.:

The purchase includes video storage, and all necessary hardware and software to integrate with 37 police vehicles. The vendor is Midwest Public Safety LLC of Decatur, Illinois.

After the vote, several citizens voice their support for the body cameras.

The push to adopt body cameras for Sioux City law enforcement officers picked up support after the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police this year, and protests calling for changes in police procedure across the country.
