Senate Democrats Ask for Hearings on the Reasons Behind Foxhoven's Resignation, 4:04

072219 404

Democratic leaders in the Iowa Legislature called today for government oversight hearings on the reasons for the resignation of former Iowa DHS Director Jerry Foxhoven.   Gov. Kim Reynolds refuses to discuss her reasons for asking him to resign. Sen. Tony Bisignano said a 2017 state law requires the reason for demanding a state employee's resignation to be made public. Reynolds has declined to explain why Foxhoven was asked to resign last month.

Foxhoven, who managed the state's largest agency that oversees the $5 billion Medicaid program, declined to comment.

The firing of Foxhoven gained national attention last week after The Associated Press reported on the former agency director's love of the late rapper Tupac Shakur and that he was fired only days after sending an email to 4,300 state workers asking them to mark Shakur's birthday.

Veteran Sioux City school board members Mike McTaggart and Jackie Warnstadt both say they won't run for re-election this fall, according to the Sioux City Journal. McTaggart, a former Sioux City principal, and teacher is completing his second term on the seven-member school board. The seats held by two other board members also will be on the ballot in November.

Miyuki Nelson, who was appointed by the board to fill an unexpired term last year, announced last week she will seek her first four-year term. First-term member David Gleiser said last week he's not ready to make a decision on reelection, as he mulls his family and professional life.

School board candidates have until next month to file nomination papers.
