SC Council Discusses Fireworks Complaints

Fireworks 1 081020

After a large increase in complaints on and around the Fourth of July, the Sioux City Council today discussed a new ban on fireworks, but took no action. Fireworks complaints increased 80 percent for the month of June compared to a year ago.

Currently, fireworks may only be legally discharged within city limits between the hours of 1 and 11 p.m. on July 3 and 4, on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.  But residents say they have heard fireworks going off in their neighborhoods before and after the Independence Day holiday.

Mayor Pro-tem Dan Moore talked about some options that could make fireworks less disruptive. They included banning louder and more dangerous fireworks, and requiring residents to get a permit signed by neighbors . . . as well as other ideas.

“Decrease the amount of time fireworks could be sold . . . that would take going to the state legislature for a change in the state law, decrease the hours that fireworks could be discharged, or designate certain areas in the city where fireworks can be used or discharged.”

Mayor Bob Scott said he wanted people to abide by the law when shooting off fireworks.  A few residents told the council they were concerned about the use of fireworks and that they wanted the law changed.
