SC Council Approves Convention Center Hotel Project

SC Council Votes on Hotel Project 060617

Last night the Sioux City Council approved a plan to build a $20 million-dollar hotel downtown next to the Sioux City Convention Center.  The Council approved the development of a Courtyard by Marriott hotel, as well as management and parking rental agreements for the project.  Mayor Bob Scott cast the one dissenting vote.  Scott noted that the hotel will be built on land that’s being used for convention parking and by those attending movies at the Promenade Cinema across the street.

“I know you young people walk a block and half, God bless you, I’m not walking two blocks and Dan, even you said you won’t. Let’s make this project then the best it can be for everybody, not just for the hotel developer, but for everybody.”

The city will construct a new 140-space parking deck behind the hotel.  The bottom level would be only accessible to hotel guests and the top level would be open to the public.  While Mayor Scott was concerned that the parking situation would hurt the downtown, council member Rhonda Capron said she believed the new hotel would be a real bonus to the city.

“People are going to be driving in off the interstate going past Virginia Street, going past Ho Chunk, going past this beautiful hotel, and they’re going to start seeing Sioux City, what we really are.”

The city’s economic development director says the city hopes to close the deal by Aug. 1. The construction process could begin this year.
