Riverside Pool Not Opening On Memorial Day Weekend, Hastings Fertilizer Fire Out, 4:32

052419 404

Crews have contained a large fire at a Hastings fertilizer plant.

The fire was reported about 11:30 p.m. Thursday at the CPI Dry Fertilizer Plant and was contained just before 4 a.m. Friday.

The blaze forced authorities to close U.S. Highway 6, but the road was reopened early Friday. A news release from the Adams County Emergency Management office says railroad tracks just north of the plant also were closed for a time during the fire, but have reopened.

The Hastings Tribune reports that the building appears to have been destroyed by the fire.

Authorities urged residents to keep their windows closed and turn off air conditioners if they have health conditions that could be exasperated by smoke.

The Riverside Family Aquatic Center will not open for the season on Memorial Day weekend as it has in the past, due to a plaster replacement project that was delayed by weather.

According to a statement from the City of Sioux City, the cold and rainy spring made it difficult to complete the $272,000 plaster replacement project in the anticipated time frame, which has pushed back opening day. The Parks and Recreation Department anticipates opening Riverside Pool on June 1. A public announcement will be made early next week, once the completion of the project is confirmed.

Crews are rebuilding a temporary flood barrier to protect downtown Davenport as the Mississippi River threatens to rise again.

The river breached the barrier on April 30, sending floodwaters into the city.
