Saturday night, the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra opens its 104th season with a legendary performer.
Dame Evelyn Glennie is a Scottish percussionist who experienced hearing loss as a child.
“This is a woman who has not only carved out her own career as the first solo percussionist in history. Obviously overcame such big odds, at the age of 12 was deaf.”
That’s Maestro of the Symphony, Ryan Haskins.
He says the Symphony has worked since 2014 to make the show happen.
Glennie has won three Grammy Awards and was featured during the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games in 2012.
She even appeared on Sesame Street where she played the trash can with Oscar the Grouch.
Glennie had a chance to check out the Orpheum Theatre last night with Sioux City Symphony CEO Travis Morgan. The symphony posted her reaction on Facebook.
“Hi, Evelyn, welcome to our hall, step in.”
“Wow, amazing. Look at this wow, it’s so beautiful. Very beautiful isn’t it? It’s almost like a warm older fashioned place. It was bigger than I was expecting.”
Evelyn Glennie takes the stage of the Orpheum theatre Saturday night for Arabian Nights with the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra she will also perform DREAMACHINE by Iowa native Michael Daughterty who will also attend opening night. Music starts at 7:30 p.m.
