The man who killed a former Iowa State University golfer from Spain was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.  

Collin Richards pleaded guilty in June to first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 22-year-old Celia Barquin Arozamena.

Police said Richards stabbed her on the course near the central Iowa campus in Ames and left her body in a pond.

Richards had been staying at a homeless encampment nearby.

Ames police reports show that Richards struggled with drug and alcohol abuse, mental health problems and homelessness after he got out of prison three months before the murder.

Celia was a top golfer in Spain as a teenager and came to Iowa State to pursue her career.

Nebraska's highest court lifted one of the last major hurdles for the Keystone XL pipeline today.   

It rejected a move by opponents who wanted to force the developer to reapply for state approval.

The Nebraska Supreme Court upheld the decision of regulators who voted in November 2017 to green-light a route through the state.

The court's decision was a victory for the $8 billion project, which has been mired in lawsuits and regulatory hearings since it was proposed in 2008.

Northeast Community College is raising money to build new agriculture facilities on the college's Norfolk campus.

Officials said what will become the Agriculture and Water Center of Excellence will give students an opportunity to learn in state-of-the-art facilities.

The Acklie Charitable Foundation announced a $5 million lead gift for the $23 million project.

Officials hope to begin construction in spring 2020.

Today, it was back to the books for a majority of students in Sioux City.  Sioux City Community Schools and Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools.

Dakota Valley and South Sioux City started class last Thursday.

As students across the state head back to the classroom, dozens offer   free lunch and breakfast.

A federal program called the Community Eligibility Provision pays for meals at schools with high poverty rates.

Last year, 157 Iowa schools were enrolled. That number is expected to go up for 2019. 

A spokesperson for the Sioux City Community School District says eight of the 21 school sites participate in the program.

Last year in Iowa, about 52% of the schools that were eligible enrolled in the program.

Shriners from several states are in Sioux City for the Central States Shrine Association’s summer convention.

The Shriners held a parade in downtown Sioux City last night. 

There’s another parade planned for Saturday morning at 9:30 in South Sioux City.
