UnityPoint Health, one of the state’s largest healthcare systems, says it’s pursuing a merger with South Dakota-based Sanford Health.
The merger would make the company among the 15 largest non-profit health systems in the country -- and it would employ more than 83,000 people.
It is estimated to bring in more than $11 billion in operating revenue annually.
The companies expect the transaction to be completed by the end of the year pending regulatory reviews. UnityPoint Health is based in West Des Moines.
It operates 32 hospitals and 280 clinics in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois including UnityPoint Health St. Luke’s in Sioux City.
Authorities have released the names of a woman who was killed and a man who was injured when their vehicles collided on a highway bridge in northeast Nebraska.
The crash happened around 11 a.m. Thursday on the Highway 275 bridge on the west end of Meadow Grove, a village of about 300 west of Norfolk.
Investigators say a pickup truck driven by 86-year-old Delbert Heithoff, of Elgin, crossed the center line and collided with a minivan driven by 63-year-old Dixie Hood, of Meadow Grove.
She died at the scene.
Heithoff was taken to a hospital.
A new South Dakota law is aimed at gaining an understanding of how many Native American women are missing or murdered in the state.
The law, which takes effect Monday, received unanimous support in the South Dako ta House and Senate.
The law requires the state Division of Criminal Investigation to collect data on missing and murdered indigenous people, and create procedures and training for investigating cases involving women and children.
The American Heart Association has honored Sioux City Fire Rescue.
The fire department received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS Silver Plus Award.
The designation is for how they care for people who suffer server heart attacks.
Sioux City Fire Rescue takes part in the Mission: Lifeline Initiative to coordinate care with patients before they even reach the emergency room.
Another “Downtown Live!” takes place in Sioux City tonight.
The third show in the series starts at 6pm in front of the public museum.
“The Haymakers are from Wichita, Kansas. They are fronted by a guy named Dustin Arbuckle. A lot of people might recall him from a band called ‘Moreland and Arbuckle’. They played at the Hard Rock in Sioux City and all over the world.”
That’s Brent Stockton who helps put the musical lineup together. The “Haymakers” are a four-piece group with a bluegrass feel.
“Which separates them from a traditional bluegrass act is Dustin’s harmonica play.”
The cost of admission is $3. The “Downtown Live!” series continues through July 26th. Except there isn’t a performance next week because of Saturday in the Park festivities.
The Iguanas from new Orleans will hit the stage on July 12th.
