Noon Newscast 3.11.20: COVID-19 in Siouxland and NAIA National Tournament Underway at the Tyson

Health officials in northeast Nebraska confirm the first presumptive case of COVID-19 in Siouxland.

The person is a high school student in Crofton, Nebraska who attended the Girls State Basketball tournament.  They were transferred to the biocontainment unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for treatment.

Because of a potential risk of exposure schools have been closed Crofton, Hartington and Newcastle.

In South Dakota, a man with underlying health problems who tested positive for COVID-19 has died, and four others from across the state have tested positive for the virus.

Iowa State officials say there are now 13 presumed cases of COVID-19, after five more were identified yesterday.

Because of concerns surrounding the new coronavirus,  the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Cedar Rapids has been cancelled.  The Special Olympics Iowa says it's canceled the 2020 Mid-Winter Tournament in Iowa City.

And, extra precautions for a national tournament underway in Sioux City.

The NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship is underway through next Tuesday at the Tyson Events Center. 

Organizers have posted signs about hand washing, added extra sanitizer and staff are doing more cleanings. 

Plus, players are encouraged to fist or forearm bump to replace the traditional post-game handshake.
