Iowa Democratic Party

It's still too early to call a winner among the Democratic presidential candidates in the Iowa caucuses.

According to partial results released by the Iowa Democratic Party, Pete Buttigieg is holding a slight lead over Bernie Sanders in the opening contest of the Democratic race for the presidential nomination.

The next contest in the election season is the New Hampshire primary this coming Tuesday. The initial Iowa results came out after 24 hours of chaos.

Technical problems marred the complicated caucus process, forcing state officials to apologize. And the troubles raised questions about Iowa's traditional place atop the presidential primary calendar.

Federal officials say one or more planes carrying American evacuees from the growing coronavirus outbreak in China will be landing in Omaha.

It's unclear where the passengers headed to Omaha's Eppley Airfield will be coming from in China and where they will end up if quarantined. Nebraska National Guard officials have been preparing to house some in 85 rooms at Camp Ashland, a guard training base about 30 miles southwest of the airport.

The guard has been working with Nebraska Medical Center officials. A spokesman declined to answer questions about what might happen to the evacuees who land in Omaha.

A South Dakota state senator has pulled a bill that would have required school counselors to tell parents if their child expressed feelings of gender dysphoria or self-harm.

He says he is yielding to an expected House bill related to parental rights.

The organization says the bill would infringe on students' right to privacy.

The Legislature is considering several bills addressing health care and school counseling for transgender youth this year.
