Woodbury County

The Woodbury County Board of Supervisors are looking at putting the proposal for a new jail on the ballot as early as March.

The Woodbury County Sheriff recently told Siouxland Public Media News the referendum for the 49 million dollars facility could go to a vote as early as late spring or early summer.

Listen for more from the sheriff straight ahead at noon on The Exchange with Mary Hartnett.

It’s the end of an era for Storm Lake, Iowa.

Their longtime public safety director and police chief Mark Prosser retires at the end of the year.

“If you would have told me 30-years ago when I moved here from  St. Louis that I would be living in such a diverse community today I would not have imagined that or pictured that in northwest Iowa.”

Prosser says during that time, Storm Lake reinvented itself by accepting and embracing change.

“I think years ago people were quick to criticize our community, now they envy our community.”

Prosser says people living in Storm Lake speak 30 different languages and even with a growing population last year crime fell to the lowest level in 27-years.

Prosser will keep busy during his retirement.  He took a new position as director of pastoral planning for the Diocese of Sioux City.  He has served as a deacon in the Catholic Church since 2007.
