Dakota County Health officials report one more death due to COVID-19 and two confirmed cases for a total of 1,785 and 37 deaths. There are 44 deaths in Woodbury County and a 11 new cases for a running total of 3,192. Union County has 124 positive cases.
The Iowa Department of Public Health reports an increase in positive coronavirus cases. There were almost 700 new cases, the biggest jump since late May. There were no new deaths for 717 in all and almost 30,000 positive cases.
South Dakota reports 62 new positive cases today. The death toll remains at 93.
Nebraska has so far avoided the resurgence of new coronavirus cases that have plagued other states.
But, Nebraska is still seeing new confirmed cases — and deaths — every day.
The state recorded 133 new confirmed cases on Wednesday for 19,310 in all. Plus, 276 deaths.
New information released by the state of Nebraska shows the coronavirus has hit the state’s Hispanic community especially hard.
The Omaha World Herald reports, while Hispanics make up about 11% of the population, they account for nearly 60% of the cases in the state for which ethnic data was collected.
Of 233 Nebraskans who died of complications of COVID-19, about one in four were Hispanic. Nearly half of people hospitalized have been Hispanic as well. A total of 276 Nebraskans have died during the pandemic and there have been 19,310 cases.
Today, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced she has directed $490 million of the $1.25 billion in Coronavirus relief funds Iowa was provided through the CARES Act, to be deposited into Iowa's Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund.
The deposit will ensure that eligible Iowans continue to receive unemployment insurance benefits.
The number of initial claims last week totaled 8,300 with a total of more than 143,000 people. It’s 100 more than the week before. But, lower than other periods during the pandemic.
Organizers of the Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana campaign say they’ve gathered 182,000 signatures from all 93 counties to allow the drug for medicinal use.
To qualify for the ballot, the campaign needed to turn in more than 121,000 valid signatures, representing more than 10% of the voters in the state. A separate campaign to legalize casino gambling at Nebraska horse-racing tracks is also expected to present signatures to state officials to place that issue on the ballot as well.
And, after shutting down due to coronavirus concerns the Wells Visitor Center and Ice Cream Parlor reopened today for the holiday weekend.
Health restrictions will still be in place. The facility closed last month after an undisclosed number of employees tested positive for COVID-19.
The past few months have been quiet for tornado activity in the state of Iowa, according to the National Weather Service.
There have been 23 reports of twisters so far this year. Last year, there were 54 and in 2018 -- 69.
Typically, the months with the most tornadic activity are April through June. However, they can strike during any month even in December or January.
