A memorial is planned for tonight in Sioux City for victims and survivors of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
“It’s so important how this pandemic has impacted so many, especially in our community.”
That’s Cassie Thompson, a local advocate, and member of the on-line group Siouxland Wears Masks. The group helped organize the event, along with Iowa Educators for a Safe Return to School.
Yesterday, volunteers hung 211 white ribbons in downtown Sioux City. One for each person in Woodbury County who have died of complications of COVID-19.
“It’s just a little tribute to their memory.”
The vigil starts at 7 p.m. in front of the Sioux City Public Museum. People who attend will be asked to social distance and wear masks. Masks will be available at the event if anyone needs one.
Today, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported one more death statewide for 5,472 deaths. There were 200 more positive tests, including three more in Woodbury County.
Siouxland District Health announced plans for another COVID-19 vaccination clinic for next Monday at the Tyson Event Center. Appointments open up tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. online and by phone. This clinic includes people over the age of 65, but has expanded to include meatpacking workers.
However, Siouxland District Health is working with some companies to set up appointments for their employees.

The next public COVID-19 vaccination clinic for Woodbury County is scheduled for Monday, March 8th, 2021 at the Tyson Events Center. The groups eligible to register for an appointment to receive the vaccine include anyone in Tiers 1-5 of Phase 1B, including the following individuals:
- First responders including firefighters, police officers, and child welfare social workers
- PK-12 school staff, early childhood education staff, and childcare workers
- Food, agriculture, distribution, and manufacturing workers who live or work in congregate settings
that do not allow for social distancing*
- Individuals with disabilities living in home settings that are dependent on attendant care staff, and
their attendant care staff
- Staff of and individuals living in congregate settings (not including college dormitories)
- Inspectors responsible for hospitals, long-term care, and child safety
- Correctional facility staff
- Individuals age 65 and older
- Phase 1A healthcare workers who have not received their first dose of vaccine
*Siouxland District Health Department (SDHD) is working with manufacturing companies directly to set up opportunities for vaccination for these workers, and these individuals will not need to sign up through one of the public clinics. In addition, this group is limited to those in congregate work or living settings that do not allow for social distancing, such as workers in a meatpacking or manufacturing production line or migrant workers who live in bunkroom-style housing. Restaurant, grocery, and other essential workers are not included in Phase 1B unless they are also included in one of the other categories listed above.

This will likely be the last large, public clinic targeted specifically to Phase 1B in Woodbury County, although we expect to continue some smaller clinics with more focused groups in the 1B priority areas. As we are beginning to see increased availability of vaccines, we expect to soon be moving into Phase 1C, which will include individuals age 16 to 64 with medical conditions that are or may be at an increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19. SDHD is also working closely with our local medical providers and pharmacies in order to increase the availability of vaccination locations to more broadly distribute vaccine to the larger Phase 1C group.

Meanwhile, Tyson Foods announced vaccines will be available later this week for all meat processing workers, including Storm Lake and for Iowa residents who work at the Tyson plant in Dakota City.
South Dakota is expected to receive 7,000 doses this week of the recently-approved Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine. It brings the state’s allotment to just over 25,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine per week. South Dakota Department of Health Secretary Kim Malsam-Rysdon says the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine is a great option for people that have trouble being able to schedule a second dose. The Food and Drug Administration on Saturday cleared the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. One dose is 85% protective against the most severe COVID-19 illness, in a massive study that spanned three continents.
A new monthly survey shows continued economic improvement in nine Midwest and Plains states, but business leaders expressed concerns about rising inflation and bottlenecks in the supply chain causing delays. The Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions for February released Monday came in at a strong 69.6 from January's 67.3. Any score above 50 on the survey’s indexes suggests growth, while a score below 50 suggests recession. But Creighton University economist Ernie Goss, who oversees the survey, said more than eight out of 10 supply managers reported supply bottlenecks and delays of up to five months. The monthly survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.
SkyWest Airlines has been awarded a three-year contract with the U.S. Department of Transportation to provide flights from the Sioux Gateway Airport to Chicago starting on the first of April. SkyWest, a regional service of United Airlines, beat out American Airlines that currently provides the service through the Essential Air Service program created to provide smaller communities with air service. Skywest currently operates daily service to Denver. More than six-months ago American Airlines planned to stop unsubsidized service in Sioux City due to the impact of COVID-19, but then changed course.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The state Department of Natural Resources says a preliminary study shows that deer throughout Minnesota have been exposed to a certain class of insecticides. The DNR says further analysis is required to determine if the presence of the pesticides is high enough to adversely affect deer health. Often referred to as “neonics,” they are the most widely used class of insecticides worldwide and are found in more than 500 commercial and domestic products in the United States. The DNR launched the project in fall 2019 following a South Dakota study that raised concerns about potential adverse effects of the substances on deer. Health officials say there is little human health risk from eating venison from deer that may have been exposed to the insecticides.
Comedian Jay Leno will be returning to Sioux City this fall. Tickets for the show scheduled for the Orpheum Theatre on November 5th will go on sale Friday morning. Leno last performed at the Orpheum in November of 2014 as a fundraiser for Girls Inc. of Sioux City.
