Sioux City officials say they’re working to fix several safety issues at the local airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration is proposing a $145-thousand dollar fine against the Sioux Gateway Airport, claiming it found several safety violations during three inspections.
The inspections in 2018 and 2019 found issues with how the airport maintains markings on its runways and taxiways; and surface areas near the runways were not properly graded. A spokeswoman for the F-A-A says the agency is in the process of talking with the airport.
Federal investigators say the pilot and a passenger spent three hours clearing snow and ice off of a small plane before it crashed after taking off from a small South Dakota airport over Thanksgiving weekend. The Nov. 30 crash killed nine of the 12 members of an Idaho family who were on board, including the pilot. The National Transportation Safety Board says in a preliminary report released Tuesday that three of the planes warning systems activated within seconds of taking off from the small airport in Chamberlain, South Dakota.
Authorities say a man died after getting trapped in a northeast Nebraska grain elevator. Deputies and emergency crews were sent about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday to the scene about 5 miles east and a mile south of Hartington. The workers managed to free him, but he was pronounced dead a short time later. The Cedar County Sheriff's Office identified him as 60-year-old Kelly Burbach, who lived in Coleridge. The sheriff's office says he worked for Hansen Farms.
Hayden Fry, the Texan who revived Iowa football and became a Hawkeye State institution, has died. He was 90. Fry's family announced through the University of Iowa that the coach died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. The native of Eastland, Texas, had never been to Iowa before taking over the Hawkeyes in 1979. The team had slogged through 17 consecutive years without a winning season. He coached at Iowa for 20 seasons, winning 238 games and three Big Ten championships. He played quarterback at Baylor and his first college head coaching job was at SMU.
Fans at the Holiday Bowl in San Diego will be asked to do the “Iowa Wave" at the end of the first quarter of the game between No. 19 Iowa and No. 22 USC on Dec. 27. The wave will be directed at patients in a children's hospital in Iowa City as well as representatives from two children's hospitals in Southern California who will be at the game. The wave will replicate what has become a game-day salute at Iowa home games to patients and family members at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
