Nebraska Voucher Program

Nebraska Voucher Program 032017

Vouchers for private schools are being proposed in Nebraska.  But vouchers may have minimal effects in rural areas of the state.  Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has more.

Nebraska last year designated 87 public schools as needing improvement, the lowest rating.  The new program would use public tax dollars to create scholarships for students at such schools to attend private institutions. The public school district would still handle transportation.  But, the bill doesn’t address the fact that forty-one percent of these schools are in counties with no private school alternatives.  Nebraska public school students can already opt-in to a different school or district, but there are sometimes more opt-in requests than spaces available. Opponents say the bill taks funds from public schools and uses them to pay private entities, and that is unconstitutional.  For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett.
