Major Power Outage Hits Sioux City; IA GOP Takes on Abortion Amendment

A MidAmerican Energy power outage impacted sections of Sioux City today.  A MidAmerican spokeswoman said the outage began sometime around 10:53 a.m.. Some 1,477 customers are impacted. Customers should have had power restored by 2 p.m..

Unity Point Health-St. Lukes was one of the biggest customers impacted by the outage. In a Facebook post, the hospital reported that their backup generators are running "and patient care continues," though ambulances are being diverted.   

Flanked by students, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed an expansion of the state's charter school program into law Wednesday. The law creates a new method of forming charter schools in Iowa, allowing groups to apply directly to the state Department of Education to form a charter, rather than going through a local school board for approval.

Republicans in the Iowa House and Senate have taken the first major step toward amending the Iowa Constitution to say it doesn’t protect abortion rights. The Senate approved language for the amendment today and the House approved it last night. Democrats say it’s wrong to put women’s basic rights on the ballot. 

A Farmers to Families Food Box event, will be hosting a USDA sponsored, drive-thru food giveaway at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the parking lot of Sunnybrook Community Church, 5601 Sunnybrook Drive.  More than 1,100 boxes of food will be distributed at this event. a partnership between the Community Action Agency of Siouxland and the Sunnybrook Hope Center,

The Farmers to Families Food Box Program has helped deliver nearly 170 million boxes of fresh produce, milk, dairy and cooked meats in the last year. Those wanting to pick up a food box are asked to enter the church parking lot on Sunnybrook Drive.

A second Farmers to Families Food Box event will be held at Sunnybrook Church at 10 a.m. May 27.
