This afternoon at five p.m. is the deadline for local candidates to file to run for local offices in Sioux City and the school district. Veteran Sioux City school board members Mike McTaggart and Jackie Warnstadt won't run for re-election this fall.

Miyuki Nelson, who was appointed by the board to fill an unexpired term last year, will seek her first four-year term. First-term member David Gleiser said last week he's not ready to make a decision on reelection, as he mulls his family and professional life.

Community organizer Monique Scarlet and Businessman Dan Greenwell announced that they were running for the school board yesterday.   Greenwell has been a persistent critic of Sioux City School District finances and reporting, announced Wednesday he is running for the Sioux City School Board.

Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott and council member Rhonda Capron are running for reelection.  Scott is being challenged by Maria Rundquist, who runs a translation business.  Two other candidates have filed nomination papers in the council race. One is Michael Bayala, a businessman originally from Burkina Fasso in West Africa, and Rosario Perez, Jr. a rapper also known as Rev.  Native American activist Michael O’Connor has also filed nomination papers.

There will be a primary election for the city council seat on October 8th. The general election is November 5th
