Local and school board elections are set for tomorrow in Iowa. In Sioux City, there are two candidates for mayor, two for the city council, and six candidates competing for four school board seats. Challenger Maria Rundquist is running against incumbent Mayor Bob Scott. Incumbent Rhonda Capron is being challenged by the owner of the SOHO bar and grill Julie Schoenherr. And appointed school board member Miyuki Nelson is running along with banker and community activist Monique Scarlett, businessman Taylor Goodvin and Dan Greenwell, Western Iowa Executive Juline Albert, and computer programmer Shaun Broyhill.
Today the Iowa Federation of Labor endorsed Bob Scott for mayor, Rhonda Capron for the city council and Juline Albert, Miyuki Nelson, Dan Greenwell and Monique Scarlett for the school board.
Tomorrow is the first time the local and school elections are allowed to be part of the general election in Iowa. It is also the first time voters will be asked to show and ID at the polls. Iowa’s voter ID law has its first statewide test tomorrow after a “soft rollout” last year.
Voters should bring an Iowa driver’s license, Iowa non-operator ID, military, veteran, or tribal ID, US passport or voter identification card to the polls.
Those without an accepted form of ID can still vote if another registered voter from the same precinct signs an oath attesting to the person’s identity and residence.
Voters without an ID or attester can ask for a provisional ballot. But they’ll likely be asked to provide additional information to election authorities within the next week in order for their vote to be counted.
Iowa residents can also register to vote at their polling place tomorrow. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
