The life and work of Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady will be commemorated at a public service on the Drake University campus Wednesday morning.  Cady died suddenly last Friday. Cady's family says the 66-year-old chief justice died following a heart attack at his family home in Fort Dodge.

Judge Duane Hoffmeyer is the chief of the third judicial district in Iowa and hears cases at the Woodbury County Courthouse.  Hoffmeyer says he was shocked when he found out about Cady’s death.

“We were just, all of the chief judges were in Des Moines on Wednesday, at a judicial council meeting, which is all of the chief judges, the eight judicial districts, the court of appeals and he chairs the meeting.

Hoffmeyer says Cady worked hard to make sure issues like racial bias and mental illness were understood by judges.

Gov. Kristi Noem says President Donald Trump has approved a disaster declaration for southeastern South Dakota for September storm damage.

Noem on Monday called the declaration “good news for South Dakota communities,” and said she was grateful to Trump “for responding so quickly.”

Noem requested the declaration last month in a letter to Trump. Sioux Falls was struck by three tornadoes in September, and Madison and Mitchell were hit by severe flooding.

The declaration includes both individual and public assistance and covers the period of Sept. 9 to Sept. 26. Preliminary assessments total at least $17 million in requested federal assistance.
