Iowa National Guard On Standby to Help with Hurricane Dorian

The Iowa National Guard is ready to help with recovery from Hurricane Dorian in Florida once it becomes clear what kind of response is needed.

Major General Ben Corell was recently appointed as commander of the Iowa National Guard.  Speaking on IPR’s River to River, Corell said he’s been in touch with guard leaders coordinating the response and is waiting to see how the storm develops. 

We need to see what the damage is from this incident, what the needs are, who can supply what.

Hurricane Dorian is expected to become a Category 4 storm by the time it reaches Florida early next week. It could drop 1 to 2 feet of rain in some areas.

The Democratic National Committee recommends Iowa scrap its plans for telephone-based virtual caucuses next year, citing security concerns. 

they had asked the state party to make Iowa’s first-in-the-nation’s caucuses more accessible.

The caucuses are regularly criticized for not being inclusive.

The DNC says unless compliance can be met through other means, Iowa should consider a waiver to return to only in-person caucuses for 2020.

Justices on the South Dakota Supreme Court are considering banning concealed handguns in the court's state Capitol space.

Lawmakers last session approved the Supreme Court's request to exempt its chamber from a new state law allowing residents with enhanced concealed carry permits to bring guns into the Capitol building. The measure requires notifying the Highway Patrol at least 24 hours ahead of time.
