Hunters and Fishermen Could Pay More for a License

Hunters and fishermen would have to pay an additional $8.6 million dollars in licensing fees under a bill being considered in the Iowa Legislature.  Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has more.

House Bill 574 would raise the price of most hunting, fishing and trapping

licenses to put more money toward conservation efforts. An annual fishing

license and an annual hunting license increase from $17 to $25 for Iowa

residents. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the bill is

needed because costs are rising. The state's conservation groups say the

legislation would encourage natural habitats and greater wildlife

populations, which would benefit hunters.  But some lawmakers say the

increase is too large. The bill is moving through the tax-writing Ways and

Means Committee, so it’s immune from some legislative deadlines and

could be advanced any time.  For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary

 Hartnett.
