The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that more than half a million acres of Iowa corn will not be harvested this fall due to damage caused by the Aug. 10 derecho that swept across the state.
Corn prices have gone up due to the crop losses, so farmers will likely get more money for the corn they do harvest.

Iowa has surpassed 75,000 positive tests since the coronavirus pandemic came to the state. Health officials announced another 12 COVID-19 deaths, and there have been an additional 505 confirmed cases today.
The state was reporting a total of 1,233 COVID-19-related deaths. Five Iowa counties had 14-day averages above 15%.
And four out of five are in northwest Iowa in Sioux, Lyon, Plymouth, and O’Brien Counties.  Sioux County has the highest positivity rate at 24 percent.
Woodbury County’s positivity rate is 13 percent.

Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered that for K-12 schools to get a state waiver allowing online-only instruction, the county they are located in must have a 14-day coronavirus average of at least 15 percent, and the districts must have a 10% absentee rate.
