We talk with Iowa District Court Judge Duane Hoffmeyer and South Dakota Supreme Court Chief Justice David Gilbertson about this crunch as well as about ways to improve our system of courts.

In honor of Black History Month, we take a look back at the history of the underground railroad in Iowa. James Schaap recalls a Congregationalist preacher who took up arms and hid escaped slaves in his basement. Mary Hartnett then interviews Lowell Soike, author of Necessary Courage: Iowa's Underground Railroad in the Struggle Against Slavery.

Ode, our live storytelling series, will host its next event this Friday at {Be} Yoga Studio on 4th Street. Ally Karsyn, series creator and host, talks with Jackie Paulson, the studio's owner, about the importance of community.
