Voters go to the polls across Iowa today to elect local and school board candidates. Six candidates are competing for four seats on the Sioux City Community School board. They are a banker and activist Monique Scarlett, currently appointed board member Miyuki Nelson, computer program analyst Shaun Broyhill, businessmen Dan Greenwell and Taylor Goodvin and Western Iowa Tech executive Juline Albert. Incumbent Sioux City mayor Bob Scott is being challenged by ESL teacher and business owner Maria Rundquist and incumbent council member Rhonda Capron is going up against challenger and 4th street restaurant own Julie Schoenherr. There are also school board races in the Lawton-Bronson and Sgt. Bluff Luton districts.
Iowa U-S Senator Chuck Grassley says he’s hearing encouraging news about the new trade agreement between the U-S, Mexico, and Canada. Grassley told reporters this morning that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has suggested the accord could come up for a vote in the House by late this year. He says if that happens, the Senate can quickly ratify it.
Grassley says it doesn’t take 60 votes. He says there is a limit on debate ahead of time, after this debate starts, there would be an up or down vote, without any amendments. Grassley believes the agreement will be approved easy in the United States Senate.”
The U-S-M-C-A was signed last November. House Democrats have been pushing for tougher labor and environmental standards in the agreement before voting on it.
