Early Voting in Iowa Dominated by Democrats; C19 Cases in Hospitals

10320 304

It is election day, and Iowa voters are expected to cast ballots in record numbers. Nearly a million people have cast absentee ballots.

Concerns about the coronavirus contributed to the surge in early voting. 64% of active Democratic voters and 42% of Republicans requested absentee ballots.

Iowa's rate of positive coronavirus cases moved up to second in the nation behind only South Dakota. Johns Hopkins University says the seven-day rolling average of Iowa's positivity rate has risen over the past two weeks. Only South Dakota has a higher average rate, at 50.6%.

And a record 730 people are being treated today at Iowa hospitals for coronavirus infections. The state posted more than 15-hundred new confirmed cases and 22 deaths, bringing the total to more than 133 thousand cases and 1,755 deaths.

Sanford Health in Sioux Falls is temporarily rescheduling nonemergency surgeries as it deals with an influx of coronavirus patients.
Sanford Vice President of Operations Andy Munce said the move is a standard part of its surge plan to maintain staffing and bed capacity for the patients who need it.

A survey sent to Sioux Falls area business leaders about a proposed mask mandate garnered 170 responses in less than an hour after going out to the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce members.
Chamber leadership crafted the survey with open-ended questions for local businesses to help form the nonprofit organization's position on a controversial mask mandate heading to the City Council for a first reading Tuesday.
The proposal would require people to wear masks in Sioux Falls in indoor settings where six-foot social distancing isn't possible.
